Approaches to Learning:
I can reflect on my studying of Early Exploration to complete a quiz on my learning this week.



Learning Activities:

Personal reading time.

Today you can have some study time and then you will complete a quiz.

We will then read a poem together and begin understanding what life was like at sea.

Today you will use The Rime of the Ancient Mariner poem to:

-De-code a text with unfamiliar words
-Identify and comment on literary devices
-Write a PEAS paragraph

Home Learning:
Activities 1-3 on the class poem need to be finished by next class if you ran out of time today.

Learning Activities:


Personal reading time.

We will review your analysis table then you can write your PEAS paragraph. Ms. Kirsty will mark your work and give you feedback.

You will complete a reflection at home. It is due on Monday- printed and signed.

In your book, write the date and title: Life of an Explorer.

Complete the following in full sentences.

1. Give 1 reason why life as an explorer was 'exciting' and 'treacherous'.
2. What was the daily routine from waking to sleep? Use your own words to list it.
3. How were meals cooked and what was typically eaten?
4. What difficulties were faced with drinking water supplies?
5. What diseases would sailors be at risk of contracting and why?
6. What 3 other difficulties did they face?

7. Overall, do you think you would have enjoyed being part of an early exploration? Give 3 well-explained reasons to support your thinking.

I can reflect on my studying of Early Exploration to demonstrate my knowledge.

Learning Activities:

Lesson 1:
After personal reading you will have some time to review your maps, studying then take a quiz on what you have learned about Early Exploration so far.



Lesson 2:
In the afternoon we will read again- phew! Next, you will learn about the different explorers and their journeys.

Use page 7-17 of this textbook to help you.


Home Learning:
Finish the first 2 pages of the booklet you have. NO MORE THAN THAT.
Read for pleasure!
Review any material that was difficult for you today.

Approaches to Learning:


Learning Activities:
Take 30 minutes to write about the reading you completed over the break and read your personal book.

30 minutes:
As we are beginning our 'Explorers' unit, let's consider some exploring you did during the break.

Create a storyboard of 1 moment or journey you took over the October break.

-Must include text and image
-Well-presented and coloured (unless b+w in a box for certain effect)
-Accuracy of language
-Chronological with clear opening and ending

In your ENSOC book write the title Banned Books and answer the following questions:

1. Where and when was The Giver banned?
2. What about the book do you think would cause it to be banned?
3. Give 2 reasons for or against the banning of the book.
4. Write the name and author or 3 other texts that are/were banned with a sentence explaining.

Learning Activities:

We will begin with personal reading time.

We will then take time in groups to share our storyboards from last class. We will then share as a class interesting things we learned about each other.



Lastly, we will engage with what you learned about the banning of the The Giver and other texts. Let's make a display that informs people passing our English class.
